I have had almost every lupus syptom in the past 4 years including stroke, headaches, unexplained seizures, severe joint pain, scaly scalp, hair loss, blood & protein in my urine, red rash across my face with exposure to sun, and continued fever usually 1 or 2 degrees but my doctor says I can't have lupus because my ana is negative but finds no other reason for my symptoms.

ANA test is positive for more than 95% of SLE cases. ANA negative lupus is very rare , such patients have positive anti ds.DNA or anti Ro . If all the above are negative lupus can be ruled out. . But in many cases these tests get positive about one to two years after onset of symptoms. Hence testing has to be repeated, to confirmly rule out lupus.
Thank you.

This is a doctor that like many are not educated enough about SLE. I went through countless doctors and specialists that flat out denied there was anything wrong until one day I presented with urine abnormality such as the blood and protein you state you have. Thank God above that I finally was placed in the right hands because I never gave up. Unfortunately, the disease was at its peak at the time I was finally diagnosed ten years later, which caused irreversible damage to my kidneys.

There are many other tests in conjunction to the ANA that can determine the disease in addition to the symptoms you display. You can find them all in the link I provided below. I would suggest seeing a D.O rather than an M.D. because they are more thorough and treat the underlying disease rather than symptoms only. Keep getting different opinions until you find someone willing to go the extra mile for you.

ANA is positive in over 95% of cases of SLE (lupus), but is not absolutely necessary to make the diagnosis. A positive ANA is one of 11 diagnostic criteria use to make the diagnosis.

yes you can have a negative ana and have lupus, period.
