I was diagnosed with ME 4 years ago. I developed shingles last year and had a major set back (3 months off work). Since then I have had fibromyalgia pains which are now under control. I developed an urticaric rash 4 weeks ago, was put on anti-histamines and steroids (I still have the rash) and saw a dermatologist this week, who has taken skin biopsies and lots of blood tests. She said she wanted to rule out Lupus. Is it possible that the shingles could have triggered lupus or possibly that my ME was miss diagnosed? Since being on steroids I have been breathless on minimal exertion and have had occasional chest pains but could this just be coinsidence and be due to the lupus (if that is what I have?)

Steroids (especially when taken in high doses) can themselves cause breathlessness and chest pain, so it's difficult to say whether these symptoms are actually due to your illness, though you should still discuss them with your doctor. Lupus is only one of a range of different immune disorders which could be causing the problems you describe. Sometimes more than one of these conditions occurs in one patient. Your doctor will have to perform tests to rule out possible conditions one by one in order to work out the best treatment plan for you.
