My Mom has had a rash- little red dots, itchy, cured with prednisone. She is 84 years old. Routine blood tests come back normal. Doctors think it may be from statins- she was on zocor for 7 years, switched to vytorin and got the rash 8 months later. After using prednisone it cleared it up, she started lipitor and broke out 8 days later. She took prednisone and it cleared pretty much , but is now exacerbated on her ankle area from the sun. Could she have lupus? She has had arthritis about 20 years- is still active , was a professional dancer Rockette and teacher.
Thanks
I read the problems for you and also others who have written similar experiences above. These are all manifestations of different grades and varieties of lupus.
Such skin lesions can be called discoid lesions. they appear in about 5 to20 % of lupus patients.
they can appear as red scaly patches, severe itching, bullae.
treatment with topical application of glucocorticoics can help a lot.
in patiets with severe bl;eeding lesions i would suggest a blood platelet count. reduction in count is associated with manifestaions in some and requires high dose prednisolone therapy.A peripheral smear should also be done to rule out any haemolysis.
thank you.
