Does lupus ever effect the liver?
Lupus infrequently effects the liver but nonspecific hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, and nodular regenerative hyperplasia even with noncirrhotic portal hypertension have all been reported in persons with lupus.Lupus can be accompanied by nonspecific liver inflammation marked by mild to mmoderate elevations in blood liver chemistries. Rarely does this progress to more severe forms of liver disease such as cirrhosis. There is a condition named autoimmune liver disease which can progress and is accompanied by autoantibodies including anti smooth muscle antibodies and anti liver kidney microsomal antibodies. Lastly, SLE is sometimes accompanied by nodular regenerative hyperplasia, which is a significant liver disease.
