I was diagnosed when I was 20 years old. After 2 years, I got pregnant and gave birth to a healthy baby boy. After two years I had another baby boy. I am worrying that they might get the lupus in the future. Is there any way to find out sooner to be able to prevent it. I don't want them to go through this disease
SLE is a multifactorial polygenic disorder,i.e it has both gentic and environmental causative factor...The genetic factor is contributed not by a single gene, but by a combination of many genes....Polymorphisms in the Human Leuckocyte Gene (Class I and II) genes which are clustered in chromosome 6 is the major genetic risk factor...Some of the genes currently investigated and found to be implicated/susceptible to cause SLE are PTPN22, STAT4, CDKN1A, TNFSF4 and BANK1... Chances of your children inheriting the mutant allele is <=25% but its phenotypic expresssion depends on the environmental factors and exposure (clinically known as Variable Penetrance)....Consult a genetic counsellor for thorough analysis to determine the inheritence pattern (hopefully your children might have inherited the good alleles from your partner and yourself:-))
The newest studies on SLE have found that there is a small chance that your children may have the SLE genes. So far, studies indicate that their chances are relatively small, but the studies are new, and not all is known as of yet. There are clinical trials being conducted at this time that you may be interested in becoming involved in.
