During pregnancy, my urine tests presented extremely high protein levels and small amounts of blood in urine too. I've since had a kidney biopsy and the initial results confirm I have Nephrotic Syndrome - more specific tests are being done to determine whether this is FSGS or Membranous Nephropathy. Currently my kidney function is pretty normal. I have experienced many other lupus symptoms to include joint and muscular pain, migraines, alopecia, nose-bleeds. I also have a skin rash not to disimilar from the typical lupus buttefly rash which made my consultant consider lupus in addition to the fact that I was referred to him in pregnancy. Anyway, at 28 weeks pregnant I was given two lots of Dexamethasone injections because there was concern that I may deliver my baby prematurely and this would help develop his lungs. My bloods have come back negative for lupus and so Im wondering if the steroid injections I had about 4 months ago could be affecting the results?
It is possible not to come up positive for Lupus on blood work, my SLE was diagnosed strictly on having more than 5 of the symptoms the disease creates. And it was later validated when I displayed improvement after steroidal treatment. I did have a + ANA, however my inflammatory markers were normal at the peak of my flare. I do not test exactly as those in case studies and I'm sure you do not either. They are a means to determine the average of the population not to dictate whether someone has Lupus or not. I would push for the extra testing in addition to the ANA and see what comes about- it never hurts to get opinions from doctors that may be more knowledgeable about Lupus.
