My lupus causes me to break out in severe hives. My body turns red, burns, and itches real bad like I have a bug in my body. I was admited to the hospital in September, 2005 where I almost died. I do not have insurance. What should I do?

Hives or urticaria are sometimes seen in lupus and can be histamine mediated and therefore responsiveto the class of medications that block histamine, such as zyrtec, allegra, claritin and benadrly, or mediated by vasculitis with the generation of complement anaphlatoxins such as C3a and C5a which increase the permeability of blood vessels in the skin resulting in edema or swelling. Treatment for process can include antimalarials, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory medication, steroids, dapsone, danazol, colchicine, and sometimes cytotoxics or immunosuppressives. If you are without insurance you should apply for medicaid or seek out clinics that may provide free care or only charge on a sliding scale based on income what you can afford.

It is a good idea to seek treatment as advised, but, in the meantime, there are other things you can do to reduce the risk of hives developing. Keep your skin covered when you"re out in the sun (even in winter), make sure to drink plenty of water, and avoid known allergens. Some people find that using a hypoallergenic cleanser instead of soap is helpful.
