Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and although autoimmune phenomenon may be involved is generally unrelated to SLE or lupus. With that said some lupus patients do experience gut inflammation that can mimic UC or very rarely the same person might be so unlucky as to develop bothj conditions coincidentally. Certain lab tests as well as appearance of colon by CT scan, colonoscopy and even when necessary bowel biopsy can help distinguish SLE involving the gastrointestinal tract and the two forms of IBD, UC and Crohn"s disease.
