Can lupus be triggered by heat exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion results when a persons core body temperature increases and is serious although less so than heat stroke which occurs with even more severe hyperthermia. The presence of increased body temperature alone is not associated with triggering lupus. However, prolonged unapposed (i.e. without sun block) sun exposure which can result in hyperthermia can also precipitate or unmask lupus as UV or ultraviolet light is a known trigger of rash in persons with lupus and, on occasion, a cause of flare of lupus even with systemic features.
