70% of all SLE patients are dsDNA positive while 30% of all SLE patents are Sm positive. On the other hand, 90-95% of all patients that have repeatedly definitely positive dsDNA and 98-99% Sm posive have SLE. Therefore, false posiive dsDNA and Sm are infrequent, but may occur in patients with autoimmune, connective tisse diseases other than SLE, with infection, or in absence of any disease.
